Don't worry about retaining the order of events because all the steps are on the pdf you'll be printing out and taking with you for your LITERARY LIAISON.
Ingredients:
[ ] 1 Book from this list: Griffin and Sabine series by Nick Bantock; 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff; Love Letters, the play, by ???
[ ] A reservation at an ethnic restaurant you’ve never been to before, such as a Tapas or Sushi Bar or Japanese, Persian, Thai, or Indian Restaurant.
[ ] Bottle of wine if it’s a BYOB
Recipe:
- In advance, locate an ethnic restaurant you’ve never been to before and make a reservation. (This reminds me of the old joke that I relate to all too well: “What do Jewish American Princesses make for dinner? RESERVATIONS!”)
- Also in advance, buy a copy (or take one out of the library) of one of the above books.
- On the way to the restaurant, begin to read the book aloud. Since the books are all correspondences, mostly between 2 people, you can each take a character and read passing the book back and forth. (If your partner is like my husband, you’ll be reading it all! And, needless to say, the driver should only read when stopped at red lights.)
- At the restaurant, order drinks (or your bottle of wine if it’s BYOB) and at least 6 appetizers… no entrees. Ask the waiter for suggestions and/or translations if necessary. Order the most exotic items you can!
- While waiting for your food, get real close to one another so you can hear and continue to read aloud. Use your voice to romance and seduce your partner. Embody the characters. Let them come alive.
- When the food arrives, revel in the orgy of a feast at your table. Feed one another the first bite. Use your fingers if you like. Eat slowly. Savor the new smells, textures and tastes. Describe them to one another.
- Take a break and leisurely read some more.
- Finish your food and share a local dessert, or split two desserts, and read on.
- Pay the tab.
- On the way home, continue reading… but don’t finish the book… stop at a suspenseful or lustful moment…
- Once at home, create your own ending to the story. Let the characters come alive within you. Have fun.
- In your afterglow, quietly read until you get to the end of the story.
